Benchmarking Utility Clean Energy Deployment: 2014

Clean Edge has teamed up with Ceres to create a first-of-its-kind report, Benchmarking Utility Clean Energy Deployment, ranking the 32 largest electric utility holding companies, which collectively account for 68 percent of 2012 U.S. retail electricity sales. The report also provides data on 87 subsidiary companies – the distribution utilities to which electricity consumers pay their monthly bills.

This report compiles data for three clean-energy indicators:

  1. Renewable energy sales: The total amount of renewable electricity sold to retail customers.
  2. Cumulative annual energy efficiency savings: All energy savings from all energy efficiency programs active in a given year.
  3. Incremental annual energy efficiency savings: All energy savings from i) new participants in existing programs and ii) all participants in new programs in a given year.

Among the 32 holding companies, NV Energy, Xcel, PG&E, Sempra, and Edison International were found to rank the highest for renewable energy sales, with renewable resources accounting for nearly 17 to 21 percent of their retail electricity sales in 2012 Energy efficiency top performers among holding companies included PG&E, Edison International and Northeast Utilities, with each company’s cumulative annual energy efficiency savings equivalent to 16 to 17 percent of 2012 retail electric sales.

This new Utility Benchmarking Report provides critical data and insights for consumers, utilities companies, clean tech firms, financial institutions, policymakers, industry analysts, environmental advocates, and other clean-energy stakeholders.
